Description

The Champagne

The Sapience Oenothèque 2014 is a true masterpiece on many levels, and not just because of its exceptionally beautiful bottle. This cuvée is the result of a collaboration between Benoît Marguet and his biodynamic colleagues David Leclapart, Vincent Laval and Benoît Lahaye. Leclapart supplies the Chardonnay (50%), Laval the Pinot Meunier (25%) and Benoît Lahaye the Pinot Noir (25%) for this prestige champagne. Benoît Marguet vinifies the Sapience together with Hervé Jestin, an expert in biodynamic champagne. Only the best parcels are used for Sapience. The base wine matures for two years in selected wooden barrels before the second fermentation in the bottle. It then matured on the lees for over ten years before being disgorged in 2019.

The Sapience 2014 also displays impressive energy, a remarkable variety of aromas and incredible depth. It is elegant and ripe, yet with a lively acidity. The aromas include citrus fruits, oranges and white flowers. With a little air, spicy notes and an extraordinary minerality also unfold. The slightly oxidative note that is characteristic of Marguet is also present in this cuvée.

This champagne impresses with its exceptional harmony and greatness! In a blind tasting with other top champagnes such as Salon and Krug, this Sapience outperformed all its competitors. Connoisseurs drink it immediately, while those with patience keep it for a few more years.

The 2014 harvest benefited from a dry and warm autumn, which contributed to the perfect ripeness of the grapes. The combination of long maturation on the lees and the expertise of the winemakers involved results in a champagne of exceptional finesse and complexity. The Sapience 2014 was produced in a limited quantity, making it a special rarity.

This vintage is appreciated by connoisseurs for its perfect balance between freshness, complexity and ageing potential.

The Marguet Champagne House

Benoît Marguet is the fifth generation of his family to run the small Marguet champagne house in the southern Montagne de Reims. This puts the winemaker in the great position of being able to work with vines that are 38 years old on average. Benoît Marguet firmly believes that an honest and straightforward champagne can only be created through organic cultivation. His vineyards are still plowed with horses and all the champagnes are aged in wood.
Since 2006, Marguet has been collaborating with Hervé Jestin, the former cellar master of Duval-Leroy. Jestin advises many Champagne houses, and Benoît Marguet has learned a lot about biodynamic viticulture from him.

The Marguet champagnes are fruity and elegant yet powerful. Mostly without dosage and with a spicy and sometimes smoky note. This, by the way, makes them excellent food companions.
